How can we learn more about the difference between Recreational and Select soccer?
Come to the meeting on June 1st at 7:00pm, in the Muskego Public Library. The Milwaukee Kickers will be hosting an informational seminar. To sign up please visit the select soccer page on MuskegoSoccer.com
Do we really need another Select soccer program in this area?
For nearly two decades MSC has made a commitment to continually evolve to meet the ever-changing needs of our members. With member interest in a community based competitive soccer option at its peak, we felt that it was a good time to evolve once again with Academy and Select program offerings.
What does “Academy” mean in MSC?
The term “Academy” is frequently used to describe a wide variety of program options. In Wisconsin, since players can’t be selected until U11, many clubs have opted to use “Academy teams” as a way to bridge the gap. Most experienced coaches agree that it’s best for children to play in their age appropriate groups. However, there’s been a growing trend to “play up” if more comprehensive training and greater competition is available. Except for goal size, almost everything else changes at U11. This includes, but is not limited to the following:
- The field gets larger.
- There are two assistant referees in addition to the one on the field.
- There are eight players [7 + goalie].
- Players are introduced to ‘offsides rules’.
- ‘Select’ becomes an option.
- Players go through tryouts.
- The cost of the program increases.
- etc.
With so many changes occurring in one year, it’s understandable why Academy programs are both popular and confusing. MSC expects to have Academy teams in fall. Players need to tryout. Academy teams will wear the same uniform as Select. For more information contact Linda Adams-Migliaccio at: soccer53150@gmail.com
Will MSC use parent coaches?
Yes, but all MSC Academy/Select head and assistant coaches are required to have at least an E license. For U15+ the head coach needs a D license [assistants need an E]. These are paid positions. Qualified parent coaches are welcome! If you are interested in learning more about coaching, please contact Greg Berdichevsky at: berdichevs@aol.com
When are tryouts?
Tryout dates are determined by WYSA. Please check the tryout summary for dates and times. The dates vary depending on age group and gender. If your child is unable to attend tryouts during the assigned times, please contact Greg Berdichevisky at berdichevs@aol.com to make alternate arrangements.
Who can tryout?
Any player U11 and older, along with U9s and U10s who are interested in playing on an Academy teams.
How many times should my child tryout?
Two times is advisable. Obviously, it’s easier to assess a small group of players. We’ve assigned several evaluators for each day of tryouts, so even if a player only attends once we’ll still collect results from multiple sources. If your child is sick, upset or feels that they did very poorly, then it’s definitely advisable to come a second time.
What should we bring to the tryout?
Please download and fill out the tryout form in advance. The players should be wearing their shin guards and cleats. They should also have their soccer balls and bring a water bottle.
My child is afraid of trying out. What can I do to make it easier?
Tryouts tend to make most children a little anxious, especially if they have never gone through the experience before. Please let them know that there’s nothing to be afraid of. Our intention is offer tryouts in a relaxed small-sided game format. They will first play with one group of children and then they’ll be moved and play with another. It’s a pain free, often enjoyable experience that helps build their confidence. The Milwaukee Kickers Coaching Director, Jerry Panek, will be at Denoon on June 13th and 14th. Trying out when he’s there might help some children feel a bit more at ease.
Why isn’t there a tryout fee for MSC Select?
The uniqueness afforded this initial year won’t happen again. We intend to offer a Select program that’s convenient and affordable with consistent high-quality coaching/training. By not charging a fee for tryouts, we’re hoping more players will come. Though Select soccer may not be right for everyone, we want to make it as accessible as possible. Players develop and grow at different rates. It’s most beneficial if they’re on a team with players of a similar skill set. Since it’s our first year, we want to have a broad range of talent to begin with. We’re hoping to find that “right fit” for everyone. MSC has formerly only had rec teams. It’s difficult to offer consistent training at a rec level. Our Coaching Directors can use the information collected during tryouts to help them improve both our Select and Rec programming next year.
Can I stay to watch my child tryout?
No, after the paperwork is complete parents are asked to leave. Please plan to return at the end of the session. We want to make the children as comfortable as possible by keeping distractions to a minimum. Most parents would like to stay and watch, but can you imagine how difficult it would be for your child if they did? Therefore, we’re expecting everyone to honor this request.
When and how will players be given tryout results?
WYSA has clear guidelines that every soccer club in Wisconsin must follow. We are not allowed to make any offers until June 20th. We will email everyone that day. If you do not hear from us, that means you did NOT include your correct email on the registration form. We will NOT post any tryout results on our website.
Will MSC have Select teams available at every age group?
Unfortunately, we have NO way of knowing until after tryouts. Although it would be nice to have teams in every group, our primary focus is the U11/Academy age group. We’re also confident we’ll have at least one U15+ boys team next spring. That being said, due to all the emails/calls received everyone should tryout.
What will you do if there aren’t enough players to fill a team?
We’ll be honest with parents. Our expectation is to have multiple U11/12 teams. If the skill set of the group is too broad, we’ll work with parents and also contact the neighboring regions/programs to come up with the best solution for all parties involved. The last thing we intend to do this first year is spread ourselves too thin.
